How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Here I am attempting to dabble into the realm of beauty blogging again - please bear with!

Sunday, otherwise known as the great makeup brush cleaning day in beauty aficionados calender.

Le sigh.

It's a beauty task that I always manage to put off doing until literally all of my makeup brushes are all dirty and the only other option is to apply my makeup using my fingers (not a fan).

Due to my dislike of washing my makeup brushes I've managed to scale things down to two extremely simple steps so that the arduous task is over and done with as soon as possible!

So my brush washing technique (is there such a thing?!) is two fold: the spot clean & the intense clean.

I'm sure that everyone has had a bottle of MAC brush cleanser in their stash at some point. Seeing as it is alcohol based it's perfect for a spot clean as it means your brushes dry pretty fast but are still cleaned and disinfected.

Basically if you're in a pinch and need a brush cleaned stat this is the perfect product. Before you start your makeup you reach for your favourite brush (you know the one that makes your favourite foundation go on flawlessly?) only to find that it's looking less than fresh - just slosh a bit of the MAC cleanser on to the brush, swirl it around on a flannel (or a tissue but I find that that gets annoying little tissue parts stuck on my brush!), set it down to dry, go ahead and start dealing with your hair or picking out an outfit and in a couple of minutes come back and your brush will be clean and dry ready for your foundation application.

For those times when you've tried to spot clean a couple too many times and your brushes are practically begging for a good deep clean!

Now this step requires some more time and dedication than the spot clean - so park yourself in your bathroom, whack on your YT subscriptions and prepare yourself to tackle the mountain of dirty makeup brushes that have been looking at you accusingly from your makeup station for the last couple of days. Ready?

Now I'll tell you my two little saviours that I arm myself with in the fight against dirty makeup brushes - Dr Bronner's Magic Soap and Soap & Glory's Massage Glove (oo-err!). I've only recently discovered this incredible combination but honestly they're the perfect team for giving your brushes an intense clean.

Dr Bronner's Magic Soap literally is magic - the tiniest amount on a damp brush lathers up like a dream and leaves your brushes as good as new. That foundation brush that has never looked as white as it did when you got it no matter how well you tried to clean it? Yep, it's back to looking white - all traces of foundation are gone and bonus, it also smells great now (my fave scent of the soap is the peppermint, closely followed by the citrus!)!

Now alone, the magic soap is fab but combined with a good swirling action onto the Massage Glove instead of just using the palm of your hand and the whole washing ordeal is over so much faster. The little massage bobbles help to get the soap into every little bit of the brushes and give a super deep clean that is far easier that just using your hands.

A quick yet thorough rinse under cold (never hot) water and your sparkling brushes are ready to be set out to dry - I like to leave mine overnight so that I can make my Monday mornings a little better by waking up to freshly washed make up brushes - it's the little things :P

Well that's how I deal with cleaning my make up brushes - hope it was helpful!

Side note: Dr Bronner's Magic Soap is available online (I like to throw it into bag just before I check out on {ASOS}) but in the last couple of weeks I've managed to find it at my local TK Maxx for just £3.99 - such a steal! I may or may not have stocked up while I had the chance!

What's In My Handbag // Work Edition

What's In My Handbag // Work Edition

Seeing as I've now just surpassed the one year of post-grad employment stage I figured that I deserved a little a treat. So obviously, I figured a new handbag would be the perfect choice! I knew exactly which bag I wanted to add to my collection - a Michael Kors. Now, I know that everyone and their mother has an MK bag but I still wanted one desperately and I'd put off purchasing one for ages so yeah that's my feeble justification to myself as to why I bought myself a new bag - I just wanted one :P

Anyway, I figured what better way to introduce my newest baby to you all than a classic 'what's in my bag' post - so here we go...

Oh, before I start - the bag that I eventually chose (after much deliberation - Ma was about to walk off I spent so much time uhmming and ahhing over the different styles!) was the "Jet Set Multifunction Saffiano Leather Tote Bag" (Kor what a mouthful! :P) in black. Obviously, because that goes with everything!

Purse // if there's one thing that makes me feel like a proper adult (along with wearing heels to work) it's having my purse and handbag match! This MK "Jet Set Travel Leather Continental Purse" that I bought last year (my first foray into MK leather goods that was swiftly followed by the "Selma Medium Leather Messenger Bag") matches my new bag perfectly. Plus this purse is really compact but very spacious inside and miraculously it's scratch-free after a year of use!

Umbrella // I live in England, so duh. Plus, you know that if you leave your brolly at home then it's going to pour down and you'll end up heading into work looking like a drowned rat. Not a good look.

Pens // I've just always been that person who has an extra pen on them and that's still true today!

Anticoagulant Books // Definitely something very specific to my job! I run anticoagulant management clinics and I always forget to pick some of these up before I leave work so now I just carry a couple in my bag all the time so I don't get caught out!

Printer Ink Roll // Again, one of those things that I'd always forget to pick up before clinic and find that just as I'm about to start that my printer is out of ink - so frustrating!

Pocket Resuscitation Mask // Very specific to my job here, but as a health care professional (albeit a scientist and not medically trained) there is a responsibility to be prepared just in case something happens to one of your patients in clinic. So, I always think that I'd rather carry this around just on the off chance that one day (god forbid) that I might have to use it to potentially save one of my patients lives. Scary stuff, huh?!

Work ID // Always useful when you need it to get into your part of the building!

Portable Charger // My iPhone dies pretty quickly seeing as I'm always on it using the kindle app during my breaks so this ban.do rechargeable back up battery is a life saver!

Earphones // Always handy if I feel like listening to some music on the walk into work or during my lunch break.

Body Spray // Always nice to have a post-lunch spritz to re-fresh before going back in to work. Side note: it really bothers me that this bottle is too big to fit in my beauty bag, grrr.

Beauty Bits & Bobs // I like carry a stash of my beauty essentials round with me just in case, currently these are (but aren't limited to!) - tissues (I'm prone to nosebleeds so these are a necessity not just handy!), paracetamol (I rarely ever take painkillers but if my wisdom teeth start coming through then I'm good for nothing until the pain is under control!), stain remover wipes (so useful if you're as clumsy as I am!), deodorant (duh), concealer + brush, hand cream (washing my hands so much at work really does a number on my skin!), hand sanitiser (yes, I pay extortionate prices on ebay to get my fix of Bath & Body Works - they just smell so good!), mirror (a must-have if you're a contact lenses wearer!), hand wipes (I just like my hands to be clean apparently!), roll-on perfume and lip balm (this one's a real good 'un!).

Oooh - a sneaky mid-week post coming at you today!

I've been somewhat lacking in motivation to actually blog - I've got a list of potential ideas as long as my arm but sitting down and actually writing a post has been proving difficult!

But anyway, I'm hoping that having the structure of this post will help me to get through a whole post in one sitting!

Eating // Cadbury's Caramel Nibbles - oh good lord these are just too delicious! Top tip: put them in the fridge - they are even more incredible when they're cold!

Listening // to any summer 2015 country music on spotify. Every time summer rolls around I become a massive fan of country music - just get me to a lake in the back of a truck with some sweet tea in a mason jar (oh and a cowboy wouldn't hurt too I suppose!)

Reading // I'm still working my way through everything that Abbi Glines has written - I'm obsessed with her writing style (I've fallen in love with every one of her main male characters so far!) and how all of her books are set in the South (particularly Alabama!).

Watching // Friday Night Lights. I've never been interested in any sports TV show but this one (again probably because it's set in the South - are you sensing a theme here?!) has seriously become my obsession. Where's my Tim Riggins hiding?!

Feeling // proud that I've successfully joined the 12-8 shift rota at work - basically I work alone in the blood transfusion lab for 3 hours! It's super stressful but I'm actually relishing the responsibility and the sense of achievement that it gives me at the end of each shift!

Obsessing // over my planner and planner stickers - still! I love spending a few minutes at the end of each day documenting and planning out my days!

Planning // where to go on my two weeks off in September - I'm leaning towards a cruise but I know that it's going to be so insanely out of my comfort zone that it could easily turn into the holiday from hell!

Smelling // the Bath & Body Works Bow Ties & Bourbon candle - oh hello yummy manly scent!

Wearing // easy breezy fit and flare summer dresses to help me deal with this crazy heat (yep actually sunshine and heat!!) that England has been gifted with at the moment!

Feeling // excited for my early start on the weekend tomorrow thanks to having Friday afternoon off - the up side to having to joining the Saturday morning shift rota!
