Book Club Friday: Silent Killer...

Hey everyone

I haven't linked up with Blonde...Undercover Blonde for ages and ages (silly uni work getting in the way of my reading time!) but on placement I've taken to reading a book on my breaks and am loving it!

I felt compelled to share this book with you all this week seeing as it was one of the best books I've read in a long time - it only took me just two and a half days worth of breaks to read so it must have been a page-turner!

This week I'm sharing - Silent Killer by Beverly Barton

Synopsis (via Goodreads
To most people, men like Mark Cantrell are fine, upstanding pillars of the community, completely beyond reproach. But their killer knows better. They are sinners of the worst kind, and they must burn on earth before they burn in hell…

Eighteen months after her husband’s unsolved murder, Cathy Cantrell has returned to her Alabama home, eager to build a new life for herself and her son. But pieces of her past are everywhere—including Jackson Perdue, the town’s deputy sheriff. The spate of recent deaths—each victim burned in the same horrifying manner—leave Jack and Cathy in no doubt that a serial killer is at work, one whose rage grows more vicious each day…

Now as a twisted killer moves in for a final, brutal act of vengeance, buried crimes are coming to light once more. And this time, justice will be swift, merciless, and as silent as the grave…

My Thoughts

I picked this book up completely on a whim (I was trying to find a third book so I could get the 3 for £5 offer at a local bookstore) and just though the blurb sounded rather intriguing - and I'm a sucker for anything related to the South - just mention Alabama and I'm sold :P

I was absolutely sucked into this book right from the very first few pages - admittedly I did get a tad confused at the start with all the different characters being introduced all at once but I soon figured who everyone was - and to be honest each character has a pretty clear 'voice' so it didn't take much getting used to to recognise them all.

What I probably liked most about this book was the fact it really kept me guessing who the 'Fire and Brimstone Killer' was - I changed my mind at least a dozen times throughout! But, oh my life - was there a plot twist at the end or what?!! I no way expected the killer to be who it turned out to be - but it totally made sense in the end - skillful story weaving right there!

My fave part of the book was the romance between Cathy and Jack (I wouldn't mind meeting a Jack in my life to be honest! :P) - it was just the right about of romance without been over the top romantic or verging on graphic.

My fave character (after Jack of course) was Seth - gosh he was so darned adorabubble! Loves him! Sadly there were some characters that I felt were just a tad unnecessary :( but heyho that's not the end of the world really.

Talking of characters - the inclusion of some anonymous ramblings from the Killer - I thought that was really clever in reminding the reader of the Killer and leaving clues as to who it could be. I thought it was really interesting that the author chose the Killer to believe that God was speaking to them and rid the world of sinning 'fake' prophets (I'm not giving anything away here - I promise!) - it was a really interesting take on the standard Killer profile.

As a said I flew through this book super fast - I couldn't wait to figure out who the Killer was but when I reached the end I was kinda sad to leave those characters behind - the sign of a good book in my mind :)

Also - when looking at goodreads for the blurb I found out that this is actually no.10 in a series - you can bet I'm gonna check out some of the other books too!! :)

Would you read this book?
