Herman Cake...

Hey everyone

In the second part of my March photo-a-day post I mentioned Herman cake and it's such a cute idea that I had to share it with you!

So, Herman is a German friendship sourdough cake and basically you get given some Herman dough from a friend and then you follow the instructions to care for it and by the end of 10 days you end up with a yummy cake and 3  sets of Herman dough to give away to friends. Basically your circles of friends get all inter-connected via a delicious cake - I don't know about you, but I love this idea :)

This is my second experience with Herman cake, I got given one last year from my friend L, and I loved it. And then a few weeks ago Nam gave me some dough and I have literally become obsessed with it!

So, you have to follow the instructions (similar to these) that your Herman comes with and care for him for 10 days; here are some pics of my most recent Herman;

Day 2

Day 3

Day 4

Day 10 - pre-cooking

Day 10 - post-cooking

And then after caring for him for 10 days you split him up and bake one - you can add anything (seriously) to him - my fave combination is ground almonds, walnuts & sultanas. I'm going to try adding chocolate eggs to my next Herman - just in time for easter!

Now, I'm no baker but I'm on my fifth (yes, I know it's an over-kill but it's so yummy!) Herman since my Nam gave me my Herman and it has worked perfectly every single time - this never happens for me, so it just shows how easy it is to look after and bake!

If you want to start your own Herman circulating around your friends here are the instructions (via) on how to start one:

  • 5oz plain flour
  • 8oz castor sugar
  • 1 packet of active dry yeast
  • Half a pint of warm milk
  • 2 fl oz lukewarm water

What to do:

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water for 10 minutes and stir.
  2. Add the flour and sugar then mix thoroughly.
  3. Slowly stir in the warm milk.
  4. Cover the bowl in a clean cloth.
  5. Leave in a cool dry place for 24 hours
  6. Now proceed from day one of the 10 day cycle.
If you do decide to start off Herman trust me you wont be disappointed and good luck! Hope you and your friends enjoy Herman as much as me and mine have :)

aHm xoxo
